PAL Boxers Win in Ashland, Kentucky

The scene was the National Guard Armory in Ashland, Ky. and was the first show there for the newly chartered PAL. Close to 800 spectators packed the arena to see 22 bouts.

Zanesville's Elgin Mitchell stayed in the win column and remained undefeated through five bouts when he bested Celles Murillo of Johnson City, Tenn. in the Men's Light Welterweight Division.

Mitchell and Murillo wasted no time testing out the other's skills and through the first round Mitchell dominated. The second round was more of the same with Murillo finding himself on the ropes several times and the two went "all-in" for the final. A close split decision by the judges awarded Mitchell the bout and Murillo had his first defeat in four tries.

Jeshua Luckett met up with Jacob Bryant of West Virginia in a Junior Boys 75-pound match. Luckett proved himself from the beginning, taking it to his opponent by putting the heat on. The second was more of the same and by the third, Bryant was lucky to finish the match after two eight-counts and a bloody nose. The victory for Luckett was his third, evening his record to 3-3.

D.J. Wilson boxed Sergio Ramirez of Kentucky in Men's Middleweight competition and was ahead through the first round, easily landing good combinations and moving on the heavier Ramirez. During the second, Wilson was rocked by a low blow that was not scored and he was unable to continue, which let the match go to Ramirez.

Paul Ingle was stood up when his opponent failed to show for the match in Senior Boys Lightweight. Akeem Mayle also made the trip for Zanesville, and no one would face him in competition in Bantam Boys.

Zanesville PAL began training this week for the 2009 Silver Gloves, and anyone wishing to qualify needs to begin training now. The tournament begins with the Ohio State qualifier in Zanesville at the Singer Center on Jan. 2, 2009. PAL will travel to Charleston, W.Va. on Dec. 6 for more show competition and experience.
